Des poissons médusés ArchiMer
Merceron, Michel; Le Fevre-lehoerff, Geneviève; Bizouarn, Yvon; Kempf, Marc.
After the efflorescence of toxic phytoplankton that affected them in the month of September 94 (see our March 95 issue), the Camaret salmonid farms were confronted with a proliferation of stinging jellyfish at the end of the month of November (photo 1). In January 95, it is in Douarnenez Bay that trout are affected by the same phenomenon...

Breton, Marguerite; Caprais, Marie-paule; Derrien, A.; Douillet, P; Dubois, E; Dupray, E; Gourmelon, Michele; Guillerm, Denise; Kempf, Marc; Lazure, P.; Le Guyader, Soizick; Le Menn, Remi; Menard, Dominique; Pommepuy, Monique; Salomon, Jean-claude.

Kempf, Marc; Jacq, E; Le Guellec, C; Merceron, Michel; Monfort, Patrick; Nezan, Elisabeth; Ryckaert, Mireille.
This document presents a year-long (1994) environmental study conducted on a site of intensive farming of salmonids (mainly fario trout) in Camaret Bay. A set of parameters were considered for the body of water and the sea bed (flow patterns, hydrology, sedimentology, biology, chemistry) and complemented by video observations. The study concluded that there was a measurable effect from the farm in its current configuration, but that the impact was of a very limited intensity and scope that did not affect the environment in a substantial way. It is recommended that production growth be accompanied by a minimum amount of environmental assessment.

Merceron, Michel; Bentley, Daniel; Le Grand, Jacqueline; Lamort-datin, Laure; Kempf, Marc.
The environmental impact of a brown trout farm located in the Grande Rade de Cherbourg (Normandy) is reported. During observations the fish stock evolved within the range of 140 to 350 metric tons. Farm influence was researched on water column through hydrochemistry, phytoplankton, faecal bacteria and, on bottom, through grain size, organic matter, metals, macrobenthos. This report only deals with water column. Except ammonia, no hydrological parameter seems to be affected, even near to the net pens. Phytoplankton and coliform bacteria were not altered. An extra concentration of ammonia was detected at some tens meters from the raft, with favourable conditions. But generally it was impossible to observe it unless close to the farming structure, downward...

Kempf, Marc; Cadour, Gwenael; Jeanneret, Hélène; Mear, Yan; Miramand, Pierre; Merceron, Michel.
This document is a result of an environmental impact study carried out between 1993 and 1995 on the site of a marine trout culture located in the Harbour of Cherbourg, France. It deals with the solid waste of the farm and concems deposition rate, sediment analysis and chemistry (fine fraction < 63 ~m, organic matter, carbon, nitrogen, copper and zinc), bottom living organisms and underwater video monitoring. The impact observed is very moderate and localised. This is mainly due to the strong d)'TIamics and flushing rate of the site. A seperate volume of the same study deals with dissolved waste and concems the water mass (volume 1 : water and pelagos). (Not controlled OCR)

L'aquaculture francaise en bref ArchiMer
Dosdat, Antoine; Kempf, Marc; Merceron, Michel; Paquotte, Philippe.
Aquaculture in France is characterised by great species diversity. Furthermore, traditional activities (farming of marine shellfish and freshwater fish) coexist with still-developing recent ones (marine fish farming, new pratices in shellfish rearing, etc.). Traditional cultures are the main contributors to the tonnage produced and employment generated. Another noticeable point is the importance of the western part of the country, which carries the main part of the production (> 80 %): the Channel Atlantic coast for shellfish, and nearby rivers for freshwater salmonid farming. On the Mediterranean coast, marine fish farming of bass and bream, as well as shellfish production by new methods (mussels on longlines in open waters), are developing. Important...

L'environnement marin côtier en Tunisie ArchiMer
Pergent, G.; Kempf, Marc.

Kempf, Marc; Merceron, Michel; Nezan, Elisabeth.
Brown water was observed in Camaret Cove, on 27 and 28 September 1994, because of the massive proliferation of a toxic phytoplankton alga. The densities reached by this alga were considerable: from 1.5 million cells per litre at a point far from the coast to 130 million cells per litre at the height of the efflorescence at the bottom of the bay, in the port's waters. The toxicity of this alga caused deaths in the farms of salmonids in cages set up at this site. The SEMII (IFREMERINRA research facility) experimental farm recorded 100% losses (15-20% on 27 September and the entire remaining stock during the night of 27-28 September), which is around 10 tonnes of fario trout and 0.5 tonne of Atlantic salmon. Aside from the economic loss, this represents a...

Kempf, Marc; Merceron, Michel; Dosdat, Antoine.
French marine fish farming deals with several species: sea bass, sea bream, turbot, trout and salmon. In 1992, 20 M fingerlings and 2600 t of fish were produced, for a turnover of 165 MFF: This very technical activity is developing, but still fragile and risky. Environment protection regulation applied to marine fish farming directly inspires from that in force in fresh water, which comes from the industry: i.e. the so-called "classified installation" regulation, concerning activities likely to produce polluting effluents. It does not really adapt to diluted effluents, like fish growing ones, and still less to marine farming; this is true for parameters like biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COB) and, to a lesser extent, for...

Pisciculture marine intensive et environnement ArchiMer
Kempf, Marc; Merceron, Michel; Dosdat, Antoine.
Farmed sea fish production is at the moment relatively undeveloped in France (20 million alevins, 2,600 tonnes of fish, 165 million francs), but it has growth potential that is yet to be exploited. Installation plans are eliciting a great variety of reactions depending upon the areas of the shoreline. The various objections, often passionate, generally rely upon environmental arguments. And yet, objective data that would make it possible to evaluate the latter are in large part lacking. The government, accustomed to regulating fresh water, lacks benchmarks and experience in the marine environment. Property developers need basic outlines and data to build their cases. Scientists are called upon, in a national and international plan, to help aquafarming grow...
